San Juan Loop Trail Hike

Most years (see here and here), we begin afresh with a hike on or around New Year’s Day. We didn’t go on a New Year’s hike in 2013 (I’m not sure what we did that year!) and we definitely didn’t go on one last year when Vivian was 8 months old, but this year presented the perfect opportunity and weather to go on one – so, we did! Our friends, the Bullocks, joined us, and we all (doggies included) hiked 3.1 miles on the San Juan Loop Trail in the Cleveland National Forest. It took us just under 2 hours to complete the hike since our 2-year-old and 1-year-old girls wanted to hike on their own a lot (which was great and a nice change of pace from Vivian wanting to be held by me all.of.the.time).

After our hike, we ate lunch on the patio at Rancho Capistrano Winery in San Juan Capistrano. And then we went home and napped!

  1. Those girls are adorable hiking together! Just this year (at least with Autumn anyway) we’ve reached the point where playdates are actually relaxing, because the kids will play together, and leave the adults alone to watch TV or talk. Sounds like you guys are getting close to that point yourselves!

Vivian does great playing with kiddos she knows. Like you said, it’s awesome to be able to trust her playing with other kids and have some relaxing adult time! She goes to daycare with two kids (Cooper and Bella) who are our good family friends, so we often see them outside of daycare. Cooper lives in Baker Ranch and so we see him a lot. It’s so comforting to know that she knows and trusts these kids and feels comfortable herself around them. In fact, it’s such a big deal to us that we’ve already toured and signed Vivian up for the same preschool that Bella and Cooper will go to so that the kiddos can stay together. I hope that they always remain friends!
