Snow Day in Orange County

Our wonderful new community hosts the best events for its residents. Earlier this week, they brought in snow and dumped it in one of the parks for our California kiddos to experience some winter fun.

Vivian had been in the snow once before – last Christmas in New York (she also saw snow in Chicago this past Thanksgiving, but it was waaaay too cold to play in!). She wasn’t sure what to make of the snow this year. She enjoyed walking around on it and touching it, but I don’t think she knew what else to do with it. So, she ate a cookie in it.

Mmmm....Cookies in Snow!

She absolutely loved the free cookies and playing in the playground.

And she and I had fun on a one-horse wagon ride around the park with Indy, the pony.

Vivian saw the cast of Frozen (she loves Frozen, which Dan recently introduced to her, but did not like seeing the characters up close – it was like seeing Santa all over again!).

She also loooooved sledding! Both Dan and I took her down the little sledding hill and she even went down twice all by herself.

We all had a fun time playing in the snow in our own backyard and ended the evening with a family snowman photo.

Perhaps next year we’ll take Vivian to a real snowy destination (and enroll her in her first ski lessons!).

Ski lessons? So soon? I suggestion introducing her to a less accident prone sport. Grandmas worry you know.

Oh Grandma! I’ll remind you what I’ve reminded my own mother – we are perfectly capable of making good and safe decisions for our daughter, while also ensuring that she has a full, fun life. You and Frank don’t ski, weren’t raised as skiers, and didn’t raise your kids as skiers. I was raised in ski school and my whole family skied. Because we learned so young, we became very adept. In fact, Anna started lessons younger than the rest of us (4 years old), and she very quickly became an expert skier who could easily transition to snowboarding. I’d probably be a better skier now if I’d started lessons younger than 10. Anyway, enrolling Vivian in ski school at 2 1/2 years old is perfectly safe – she will be well padded with winter clothes and besides, she doesn’t have far to fall! When we have questions/concerns about her learning how to sew (perhaps with a 4-H project?!), we’ll come to you for advice and grandmotherly wisdom:-)

Sewing? With a machine? She could sew right through her finger! She could burn herself with an iron! She could prick her finger and fall asleep for a hundred years!
