Dan’s 30th birthday gift from me this past April was tickets to see his favorite NFL team, the Miami Dolphins, play in their home stadium in Miami (Sun Life Stadium). He has loved the Dolphins since he was a little boy because 1) Dolphins were his favorite animal, 2) he shared a first name with the famed Dan Marino, and 3) his older cousin, Glenn, lived in the area for awhile. Although we didn’t plan this trip to be a babymoon, it is the second big vacation we’ve taken since finding out that we’re expecting a baby, so it kind of worked out to be Babymoon #2 also.
Luckily, flying and traveling while pregnant has been very easy for me. I was 21 weeks along when we ventured to Miami and the long cross-country flight felt completely normal to me. I’m really hoping that my good fortune continues because I have two more cross-country flights planned while pregnant – one to NYC when I am 24-25 weeks and one to Ohio when I am 30 weeks.
After a delicious brunch in Coral Gables on Sunday morning, we went to the Sun Life Stadium, rushing to get to our seats in time for the 1pm kickoff. As we gave our tickets to the ticket-takers, we questioned why there were so few people rushing into the stadium along with us. Well…turns out that just a few days prior to the game, the kickoff time was changed from 1pm to 4:05pm! So, instead of being a minute or two late to the game, we were three hours early! We checked out the pre-game activities set up outside the stadium and relaxed until we were able to enter the stadium.
After the game, we grabbed dinner at our hotel’s bar and then relaxed into our comfy hotel bed so that Dan could watch the Sunday night NFL game and I could sleep!
On Monday, we visited Gator Park and took an airboat tour around the Florida Everglades. While on the tour we saw many birds, mama and baby alligators, and yellow-bellied turtles. After the tour, we attended a cheesy wildlife show where I “kissed” a toad and Dan held an alligator.
We spent the rest of our afternoon riding bikes around South Miami Beach and checking out the scene down there.
We had a great long-weekend getaway and enjoyed seeing the Miami area (and seeing the Dolphins beat the Chargers). We also confirmed, once again, that we truly are not “beach people.” Next year, we think we’ll try to catch a live NFL game in Denver:-)
